Not Funny - No
She asked if I'd like to hear a joke
It's about Alzheimer's
No thanks
my father-in-law has Alzheimer's
it's not funny
Oh, this isn't bad--really
The doctor said
I have bad news and good news
The bad news is
you've got Alzheimer's
The good news is
you can go home and forget about it
Not funny--no
but, you might have laughed
your sense of humor still waging war
with loss
She wouldn't laugh, though,
if she had seen
you
staring vacuously-mid-sentence
knowing you had been saying something
you cared to say
but the idea had fled
leaving behind
alone
She wouldn't laugh if she had seen you
crying--lost on your way to visit your son
I've been there so many times
you say to a woman at the house
where you've been forced by helplessness
she--thankfully patient--
drives as you, dependent,
watch for your memory
She wouldn't laugh if she had seen you
in the night, lashing at your wife
with World War 11 realities
What's she doing here
this woman?
And when you realize
not only who she is
but what she suffers for you
you sag
Not funny--no
But might it be a mercy
to reach that final forgetfulness
where one is released from the pain
of remembering
that
one has
forgotten?
